Levine Children’s Hospital

The Martin Truex Jr. Special Needs fund was established in 2011 at the Levine Children’s Hospital (LCH) in Charlotte, NC.  The fund’s main focus is to help deserving families of children being treated at LCH. The assistance helps provide everything from unexpected emergencies, to support groups programs, special equipment and in some instances, temporary housing that enables families to be together and be there for their child.

It is only through the generous donations of our Foundation supporters and from the proceeds raised at the annual Catwalk for a Cause, that so many children and their families receive this special assistance.

LCH opened their doors in October 2007. As a brand new 234-bed children’s hospital, it combines the medical expertise the community already relies on with a spectacular new state-of-the-art facility designed to care for the physical and emotional needs of children and their families.

Below are just a few testimonials of families that have benefited from the MTJ Special Needs Fund:

 

J’s parents are young teenagers in high school. J’s mother moved in with J’s father’s parents after her mother abandoned her.  J’s paternal grandpa rents have assumed responsibility for J and his parents.  The entire family was devastated to learn that J had to undergo a stem cell transplant to save his life.  Soon thereafter, J’s grandfather received a layoff notice from his employer of 31 years. The grandmother became the sole source of income and has been upholding a large family on her modest wages.  The family experienced a critical financial situation during treatment, due to increased medical expenses and time the grandmother missed from work in order to care for her grandson. Special Needs Funding assisted this extremely needy family with utility bills to keep the home warm throughout the winter.

 

C’s family made the trek from Puerto Rico to Charlotte in an effort to save his life.  The family visited and stayed at Levine Children’s Hospital daily for nearly 19 months.  Although the family set aside money to cover their household expenses, when their son’s stay was extended so that he could receive life-saving medical care, their savings were soon exhausted, and the family turned to LCH to ask if any assistance could be provided.  Help came in the form of Special Needs Funding, which assisted this family in paying the mortgage for 3 extra months until it was safe for J to return to home.  The family was grateful beyond words; however, they did ask LCH staff to express their sincere and heartfelt gratitude to the donor who helped saved their home and allowed them to stay with their child during his treatment and recovery period.

 

The B Family was excited to bring their daughter home after a lengthy hospitalization and recovery period.  Two days prior to the daughter’s discharge, Mr. B discovered that his home furnace died.  In the middle of winter, a home without heat would have kept their daughter hospitalized due to her weakened immune system.  The B family was unable to afford to purchase a heating unit with their one, limited income.  With the help of Special Needs Funds, Levine Children’s Hospital was able to assist this family in crisis by helping them purchase a new furnace.  Sadly, their child passed away in late March; however, she was able to be at home with her parents throughout the winter in their familiar, warm home.  And for that, they will be forever grateful.

 

The family of an LCH patient has faced many challenges since their child was diagnosed with cancer.  On the way to a doctor’s appointment, the mother called LCH sobbing on the side of the road.  The family car had broken down for the second time that month.  They had no money for repairs and the money they did have was allocated to pay the rent, which was due in 2 days.  Special Needs Funds provided rent assistance, which allowed the family to put their funds toward the car repairs.
